Why Dental Health Check-Ups are so Important

Benjamin Franklin once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Preventative measures can make a big difference  in all acts of life.  For instance, routine oil changes keep your car's engine clean and running.  Yearly medical physicals keep your vitals in check and your body healthy.  The same can be said for regularly scheduled dental health check-ups.

What to expect at your dental visit?

There are two parts to a regular dental visit: the check-up and the cleaning. At each visit, your dentist looks for specific issues.  Do you have any plaque or cavities? Are there signs of gum disease or abnormalities in your mouth, such as oral cancer?  Your dentist will alsobe searching for chipped or cracked teeth, signs of uneven wear or thinning of the enamel, and other problems that can be simpler to treat if they are treated early. X-rays are taken periodically at your regular visits to evaluate your oral health and capture images of the inside of your teeth and gums.

Brushing and flossing regularly help clean the plaque from your teeth, but you cannot remove tartar at home. Therefore, it is necessary to visit your dentist and have your teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis.. During your cleaning, a dental professional will use special tools to remove tartar. After this process, your teeth will be polished using a gritty paste to help remove scratches and any surface stains caused by certain foods, coffee, or smoking. Lastly, they will use floss to make sure the areas between your teeth are clean.

What you should do between visits.

You can manage plaque at home by brushing and flossing regularly. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth with fluoridated  toothpaste for two minutes twice daily.   Likely at your regular visits, you can ask your dentist for recommendations for oral care products, and sometimes they provide samples. You can also use a mouthwash to help keep your breath fresh, but it doesn’t replace brushing and flossing..

Regular check-ups can detect problems early before they become significant issues that can damage your oral health as well as your overall health and can be very costly. Regular dental check-ups are important because your dental team will work to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Ideally, you should have a regular dental visit at least every six months or as recommended by your dental professional. So, make preventative dental care a priority and schedule your next appointment today.
