Reasons a crown is needed:

Large filling: You have a cavity that is too large for a filling. When you have a tooth that has a cavity or fracture that involves half the width of the tooth or more, it may need to be covered with a crown. If a more massive filing has been in your mouth for a while, it sometime will need to be replaced with a crown due to signs of stress and cracks around the original filling.

Root canal: If you have had a root canal treatment, a crown can protect the restored tooth and prevent it from fracturing. Cracked, worn down, or otherwise weakened tooth: If you have a habit of grinding your teeth, then the teeth will become shorter over time. Also, teeth can wear down due to acid erosion caused by acid reflux, bulimia, or an acidic diet. A crown will allow you to restore your teeth to their standard size.

Undesirable appearance: If you have a tooth that you find unacceptable in appearance due to color, shape, or space between your teeth, then a crown can be made to look very natural and restore your beautiful smile.

Crowns are made from several types of materials such as metal alloys, ceramics, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or composite resin. Whenever a crown is made, the material is often colored to blend in with the color of your natural teeth.

Your dentist will take into consideration your tooth’s location and function, the position of your gum tissue, the amount of tooth that shows when you smile, the color or shade of the tooth and your presence when deciding the material to use for your crown.

Traditionally crowns have taken multiple visits to the dentist first to be molded and then fitted into a person’s mouth. However, same day crowns are now available to minimize time in the dentist office.

Same day crowns are done using a faster, easier and better crown procedure. Using Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics or CEREC Technology, you can avoid the putty or paste impressions and get a more accurate tooth impression. Once images are taken, they are sent to a computer and a 3-dimensional impression is created and a crown is molded from a block of porcelain. The crown is then fitted, and adjustments can be made the same day. Once complete the dentist will secure the crown using adhesive and polish remove any excess cement.

Dr. Szott can do a same day crown in the office, so you don’t have to worry about a temporary, second visit or the need to get numb twice. This is ideal for patients who have busy schedules and who cannot come into the office for multiple visits. Save yourself the dental anxiety and get it complete in one trip.
