Manual or Power Toothbrushes?

Some patients who are using manual toothbrushes have excellent oral health. However, more often than not, this is not the case. Switching to a power toothbrush can make an immediate and positive impact on oral health.

Image used in dental blog to compare the differences between manual brushing and power toothbrush brushing.Electric toothbrushes provide far more brush strokes than manual brushes in the same amount of time making them far more effective. Some power toothbrushes are able to provide more brush strokes in a minute than a manual toothbrush can deliver in a month! For that reason, they are extremely more effective at plaque removal thus preventing periodontal diseases.

To receive the maximum benefit from the power toothbrush, it must receive proper care including changing the head every three months or when the bristles show obvious wear. A worn toothbrush head (manual or electric) diminishes plaque removal by 27%.

Despite the increased number of brush strokes, toothpaste is still recommended with power brushes. The polishing agent in toothpaste helps remove biofilm and stains and the fluoride helps combat tooth decay.

Power toothbrushes also provide a two-minute automatic brushing cycle. This proper interval of brushing as well as the increased number of brush strokes of a power toothbrush provides a more thorough cleaning of all the teeth. The end result is a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime!
