Periodontal (Gum) Treatment

The gums, ligaments, and bone around the teeth are referred to as the periodontium. When the periodontium is not healthy, deeper gum pockets develop around the teeth, allowing tarter deposits to form under the gumline.  This jeopardizes the teeth just as a bad foundation would threaten the stability of a house.  Signs of an unhealthy periodontium include gums that are red and bleed easily, persistent bad breath, gums that are pulled away from the tooth, and loose teeth.

With proper gum treatments it may be possible to return the gums to a healthier state. The treatment usually involves a deep cleaning with root planing, which is the process of smoothing the root surfaces and removing any infected tooth structure.  It is often done with local anesthetics and sometimes local antibiotics.

If the gum disease gets too severe, a referral will be made for surgical treatment by a gum specialist, a Periodontist. This is why it is important to have gum disease treated at the first sign of a problem.
